Dr. Javier Garcia Fernandez discusses lung physiology and how to apply lung recruitment strategies in the operating room. He reviews customizing patient PEEP settings to help reduce post-operative lung complications. Dr. Fernandez is chair of the Department of Anesthesia in Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda in Madrid. He has published numerous human and animal research studies on the pharmacokinetics of anesthetic drugs, ventilation and pediatric ventilation.
Prof. Javier Garcia Fernandez obtained his medical degree and graduated Cum Laude at La Universidad Complutense de Madrid, which is one of the oldest universities of the world. He then went on to serve as an Associate Professor in Anesthesia and Critical Care in the same university, and a professor in Anesthesia and Critical Care in the Universidad Autonoma de Madrid. In between his academic and clinical responsibilities, he finished his MBA in Healthcare Administration and Hospital Management.
He worked at the Hospital Universitario La Paz, Madrid as a specialist in Pediatric Anesthesia and Critical care for 5 years, and at present, is on his 7th year as chair of the Department of Anesthesia in Hospital Universitario Puerta de Hierro Majadahonda in Madrid.
As a researcher, he has over a hundred abstracts and research papers to his name. Many of these are human and animal studies on pharmacokinetics of anesthetic drugs, ventilation and pediatric ventilation. He is also an Associate Editor of the Ibero-American Journal of Non-invasive Ventilation, Current Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, and Revista Espanola de Anesthesiologia y Reanimacion, and the President of the Research and Ethics committee of Puerta de Hierro Hospital in Madrid.
